Merimbula Fishing Report Early February 2023

Well, we are though the real busy period and there were a lot of happy holiday anglers about.

There have been some good bags of Sand Flathead being caught with Short Point up to Bournda Island producing good results with 30 to 40 metres being good depths to try.

Snapper to three kilos have been taken on the reefs along with Morwong, Leather jackets and Nannygui.

Plastics, Micro Jigs and baits of Squid and Pilchards have all been taking there share of fish.

The Merimbula and Tartha Wharfs are producing Squid and Salmon and Tailor at times, but the Kingfish are spasmodic at present.

All the estuary systems have been fishing well Mogareeka, Merimbula, Pambula and Wonboyn have all been providing excellent fishing for Dusky Flathead, Bream, Whiting, Trevally and quite a few Mulloway up to a metre but there will be some bigger fish about.

It is worthwhile to put some effort in along the beaches at night for a Gummy Shark or the smaller Bronze Whalers as there have been a few about.

Bournda, North Tura, Tura, Haycock and the Pinnacles are all worth fishing at present for Salmon with some of the better fish topping three kilos.

Lure casting and Pilchard baits on a paternoster rig are as usual the best techniques.

Out wide there has been some good Marlin action and focus your efforts along the edge of shelf line and keep your eye on the sounder and watch for surface activity to locate the bait.

Do not discount the inshore waters if bait is present for over many years l have had many multiple days on Marlin closer inshore.

Trolling lures, skip baiting, live baiting and my favourite switch baiting are all methods that are accounting for fish.

If conditions allow mainly in relation to current strength it would be another good option to do a bit of deep dropping.

The period approaching now late Summer and into Autumn is one of the best fishing periods if not the best on the far South Coast so get out there and get amongst it.
