With only a month to go off the Eucumbene Spawn run, we’ve got a few pointers to help you land that trophy fish before the season comes to an end.

In recent years, a technique that has taken the world by storm has been European Nymphing. Sometimes commonly referred to as Short Line Nymphing.

The technique was developed from the World Fly Fishing Competition scene, as are most modern techniques.

It involves fishing weighted nymphs at short-range using only leader material out of the rod tip, and doesn’t involve casting a traditional fly line

It’s an incredibly effective method for Trout in Rivers, particularly in the colder months when the surface activity of terrestrial insects is slow.

However, this method is incredibly effective all year round.

The reason being is that unlike traditional indicator nymphing methods, the drift of the nymphs underneath the indicator aren’t dictated by the speed of the surface current.

Euro nymphing is unlike Indicator nymphing due to there being no suspension indicator on the surface. The nymphs are able to cut through the surface current and drift much more naturally at the same rate as the current in which they are being fished, which is generally on the bottom due to there being less or a slower current. This is where most of the fish feed as they don’t have to expend as much energy on the bottom for food as they do near the surface.

Euro Nymphing is very much a tension-based technique which relies on feel, rather than visual strike detection.

Therefore, the reaction time in hooking fish is much quicker than traditional indicator techniques.
